Previous events and past writing contests

Throughout the year, the Office of the Campus Writing Coordinator has been celebrating student writing. We continue that celebration with an evening open mic night. We welcome nonfiction writers, fiction writers, poets, and textual composers of all sorts! Bring something to read or come enjoy the work of other students. We’ll provide the space and the food; you provide the art. See you there!

The Office of the Campus Writing Coordinator is proud to be a part of The Writing Contest Initiative: Students Writing Toward Inclusive Excellence. This writing contest series celebrates students’ use of writing, in all forms and genres, to produce knowledge and generate conversation about important diversity issues in our world and at UCI.

A UCI / UCR Cross-Campus Contest

Compose a 1000-word story, poem, non-fiction meditation or short film that prompts or even provokes readers or viewers to think about the future in some specific and meaningful way.  As you compose, think about whom you want to reach with your words and/or images (your audience or public) and what “takeaway” you want them to experience through your words and/or images.  Your composition doesn’t have to have a “moral,” and sometimes the best work leaves us with more questions than answers.  But you do want to have a specific subject or point that you are asking your readers or viewers to consider.

DEADLINE: May 11, 2017
Submit a Word document, PDF, or URL to Professor Jonathan Alexander at
