Winter Quarter '24 Lunchtime Discussion: Revising AI Writing
Thursday, February 8, 2024
12:00 pm–1:15 pm
New Location: HIB 135
Lunch will be provided for registered attendees
With the proliferation of AI-based technologies (ChatGPT, Bard, Bing, BlenderBot, and Claude, to name but a few) and the many affordances and challenges they present, instructors have begun to explore ways to use these tools to support but not supplant student writing. In this lunchtime presentation and discussion, three instructors will briefly share how they have used AI tools to generate drafts of a document that students then critically assess and substantially revise. By putting the emphasis and effort on human revision, the instructors seek to (1) develop their students’ understanding of specific genres and writing conventions; (2) sharpen critical thinking skills, such as summary, analysis, synthesis, and persuasion; and (3) increase student fluency with AI tools.
Presenters: Dr. Audrey Chen Lew (Department of Neurobiology & Behavior), Dr. Stephen Mang (Department of Chemistry), Dr. Hugh Roberts (Department of English)
